Mellanox Ethernet Solutions Boost Performance of STFC’s JASMIN Data Center

SUNNYVALE, CA and YOKNEAM, ISRAEL – September 30, 2014 – Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLNX), a leading supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data center servers and storage systems, today announced that the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has selected Mellanox’s Ethernet technology for the upgrade and expansion of its JASMIN super-data-cluster. STFC is one of Europe's largest multidisciplinary research organizations and hosts the JASMIN system which is used to further research in the atmospheric science and earth observation communities.

Mellanox’s end-to-end 10/40/56Gb Ethernet solution which includes ConnectX®-3 Pro adapters, LinkX™ cables, and SwitchX®-2 10/40/56Gb Ethernet switches configured in Virtual Modular Switch™ (VMS) mode provide the JASMIN cluster with non-blocking, high throughput processing at a low cost to enable complex simulations for advanced environmental research. A major upgrade marking Phase 2 of JASMIN is that it now provides an additional 7 Petabytes of disk storage and 3,000 compute cores connected in a non-blocking network topology.

STFC’s JASMIN super-data-cluster, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), provides a globally unique computational environment and infrastructure for data analysis. Mellanox’s VMS architecture forms the basis of JASMIN’s Phase 2 expansion to provide a 1:1 non-blocking ratio. The facility also leverages Mellanox ConnectX®-3 Pro adapters’ VXLAN offload support, allowing dynamic allocation of virtual machines in JASMIN Phase 2.

The existing JASMIN Phase 1 network will be enhanced with Mellanox’s end-to-end Ethernet interconnect, taking advantage of the high-port densities of Mellanox switches with speeds up to 56Gb/s to provide a non-blocking network in a very small form factor. The upgraded network and VXLAN support on JASMIN will be available in the third quarter of 2014.
