Mellanox Announces Support for OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution

INTERNATIONAL SUPERCOMPUTER CONFERENCE 2006, DRESDEN, GERMANY – June 26, 2006 – Mellanox™ Technologies Ltd, the leader in business and technical computing interconnects, today pledged its support for the recently released Linux-based OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) revision 1.0. The entire family of Mellanox InfiniBand host channel adapters (HCA) and switch silicon solutions has been tested with OFED revision 1.0 by multiple industry partners, delivering for the first time a comprehensive, hardened, and supported open-source software stack. This combined hardware and software solution is ready today for end-to-end InfiniBand RDMA deployments suitable for enterprise data centers and high-performance computing environments.

The Industry Behind the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution
The OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) is an organization that consists of over 25 industry-leading silicon and systems vendors, software solution providers and end-users focused on open-source development of kernel and user level software used for high performance clustering and grid applications. OFED revision 1.0 supports clustering and grid connectivity using InfiniBand solutions, and is distributed through the OFA website (  Availability of an open-source, interoperable and supported RDMA software stack is sparking interest in the operating system vendor and independent software vendor (ISV) community. Major Linux OS distributions, such as those from Novell and Red Hat, plan to include OFED in their distributions.

OFED revision 1.0 includes kernel and user level software for high-performance and RDMA based connectivity over InfiniBand.  It provides all popular application interfaces such as sockets, IP, SCSI, iSCSI and DAPL, offering existing end user applications the ability to seamlessly deploy over InfiniBand. Various open source and proprietary MPI (Message Passing Interface) solutions have also been validated over the OFED distribution for high-performance computing applications. OFED supports popular InfiniBand host channel adapters available in the market today, and includes management and diagnostics tools, as well as performance benchmark tests.

OFED is the result of open source community-wide development since the inception of the OFA, previously known as The Enterprise Work Group (EWG) and other members within OFA worked collaboratively to create a hardened and supportable version of the open-source OFA software, and OFED revision 1.0 is the culmination of such an effort.
